'Take heed, dear friends, to the promptings of love and truth in your hearts. Trust them as the leadings of God whose Light shows us our darkness and brings us to new life.' Quaker Advices and Queries

Early Quakers spoke of a ‘Light of Christ within’ which showed them individually the reality of their lives. They believed that only by submitting to this could they end inner conflict and self-deceit and so live in peace with themselves and God.

But how do we know what is of the ‘Light’ and what is simply our own egos? This is the question that led Rex Ambler to research the meditative process used by early Quakers and to make it accessible and relevant to today’s world. The outcome of this research is ‘Experiment with Light’.

Today the idea of spiritual ‘submission’ is a challenging concept. But Rex Ambler writes in ‘Light to Live By’

‘…submission to reality is submission to God, since God is the ultimate reality. And being at peace with ourselves we find peace with God. But along this path to God we do not have to surrender our intellect, our feeling for life, our morality, our integrity, our sense of truth. On the contrary, they make up the path.'

In July 2009 a small group of Peterborough Quakers decided to meet regularly to incorporate the Experiment with Light into their own spiritual practice.

The process is challenging. Issues that arise are often those we have been trying avoid dealing with and facing them can be uncomfortable. The Group meditation takes us beyond this point to a place where The Light of the Spirit can show us the first steps towards resolving these issues.

Anyone within our Meeting is welcome to attend, as are others who seek deeper spiritual insights. We usually meet on the third Thursday of the month at 5.30pm at the Meeting House. The dates and times are confirmed in the monthly Peterborough Quaker’s Calendar.
