Garden Development Project
Behind the Peterborough Meeting House is a jewel of a garden. It provides an oasis of calm in the midst of the noise and busyness of the City. The garden is accessible to all during daylight hours and may be entered by going down the lefthand side of the Meeting house which is also wheelchair user friendly. We also have particular times when people are invited to enjoy our garden and you will see from the advertisment below what we offer. Everyone is very welcome to join us for these events.
However, whilst there are many beautiful features about the garden that our visitors can currently enjoy, the trees being the major attraction, we would like to breathe new life and inspiration into it. To this end we have employed a Garden designer who, having listened to our ideas, has drawn for us a visionary plan for the future. Some of these ideas include a path all around the perimeter for wheelchair users, clearance of shrubbery and debris, new fencing and gating, areas of new planting, a labyrinth path to aid meditation and many other features as well. The inspiration for the whole design is based on the "Quaker testimonies" - that is the principles that Quakers try to live by and these include a commitment to practice truth and integrity, to work for equality and community, to aim for simplicity of living, to encourage peace, and to care for the earth and the environment. In the new plan for our garden, we hope that we can symbolise each one of these testimones in different areas around the garden through the use of plants or particular features.
We need to raise a lot of money to make our dream a reality and we are in the process of applying for grants and thinking of ways to fundraise ourselves. If you would like to know more about our plans or can help in any way in our fundraising efforts, please do contact Linda Elliott who will be very happy to speak with you.
